PREFACE The N8405-013F BladeServer Assembly Unit is a 4U rack-mounted enclosure that offers space- and power-efficient performance and serviceability. The CPU blade, hard disk drive, and other CPU blades are typically installed into the blade assembly unit that houses multiple CPU blades that share common resources such as cabling, power supplies, and cooling fans.

Safety Notes This section provides notes on using the blade assembly unit safely. Read this section carefully to ensure proper and safe use of the blade assembly unit.

Do not use any unauthorized interface cable. Use only interface cables provided by NEC and locate the proper device and connector before connecting a cable. Using an unauthorized cable or connecting a cable to an improper destination may cause a short circuit, resulting in a fire.

CAUTION Avoid installation in extreme temperature conditions. Immediately after the blade assembly unit is powered off, its internal components such as hard disk drives are very hot. Let the blade assembly unit internal components fully cool down before installing/removing any component. Avoid contact with the blade assembly unit during thunderstorms.
Power Supply and Power Cord WARNING Do not hold the power plug with your hands wet. Do not disconnect/connect the plug with your hands wet. Failure to follow this warning may cause an electric shock. Do not connect the ground wire to a gas pipe. Never connect the ground wire to a gas pipe.

CAUTION Use the authorized power cord only. Use only the power cord that comes with the blade assembly unit. Using an unauthorized power cord may cause a fire when the electric current exceeds the rated flow. Also, observe the following to prevent an electric shock or fire caused by a damaged cord.
Rack Assembly WARNING Do not use the blade assembly unit in any unapproved place. Install the blade assembly unit on a standard EIA 19-inch rack assembly. Do not install the rack containing the blade assembly unit in a place inappropriate to the rack installation environment.

CAUTION Do not pull out a device from the rack if the rack is unstable. Always pull out a device from the rack only if the rack is perfectly stable (by the installation of stabilizers or earthquake-resistant construction). Do not leave more than one device pulled out from the rack. Pulling out more than one device from the rack at the same time may cause the rack to fall.
Installation, Relocation, and Storage WARNING Never attempt to lift the blade assembly unit if less than four persons are present. The blade assembly unit weighs up to 67 kg (depending on its hardware configuration). To avoid personal injury, four or more persons are required to carry the blade assembly unit.

WARNING CAUTION Do not leave the blade assembly unit pulled out from the rack. The blade assembly unit has no mechanical stoppers or locks to prevent it from falling from the rack. Fix the blade assembly unit to the rack while installing and removing the optional device or maintaining the blade assembly unit.
Operating CAUTION Do not pull out or remove the blade assembly unit from the rack if it is not necessary. Do not pull out or remove the blade assembly unit from the rack if it is not necessary. Pulling out or removing the blade assembly unit from the rack may cause the blade assembly unit to operate incorrectly but also its fall on a person, causing possible injuries.
Warning Labels Warning labels are attached to potentially dangerous components or in their vicinity in your blade assembly unit to inform users of hazardous situations that may arise when operating the blade assembly unit. (Do not intentionally remove or damage any of the labels.) If you find any labels totally/partially removed or illegible, contact your service representative.
We recommended you use options provided by NEC. Some memory devices and hard disk drives of other vendors can be compatible with the server, however, if a third-party option causes damage or defect within the server, you will be charged for the repair even within the warranty period.
Features The blade assembly unit can contain up to six CPU blades and two intelligent switches (L2) in the chassis of 4U (177 mm) height. Server function and switch function for 6 servers can be consolidated into one blade assembly unit. Two Ultra320 SCSI hard disk drives can be connected to one CPU blade.
Part Names and Controls This section describes the part names and controls of the blade assembly unit. Power lamp (Green/Amber (#1 to #8) Located at the top left of the lamp group of each slot. The POWER lamp goes off when the relevant slot does not contain a CPU blade (slots #1 to #6) or intelligent switch (L2) (slots #7 and #8). If the slot contains either of them, the lamp indicates the power status of the device installed.

Media Select switch (Left: +, Right: –) The Media Select switch is provided to select the slot to connect with the floppy disk drive and CD-ROM drive at the front the blade assembly unit, or the USB device connected to the USB connector.

Serial Select Switch Serial Select switch is used to select the CPU blade that can use the serial interface device. Pressing this switch changes the connection between the serial I/O port of CPU blade and the serial interface device connected to the serial port at the front of the blade assembly unit. To disconnect the connection with the serial interface device, first turn off the power of the CPU blade and that of the destination device and pull out the power cord from the destination device.
This subsection also describes the removal procedures. The blade assembly unit can be installed on the proper rack provided by NEC or several third vendors. (Each third vendor's rack must conform to the EIA standard. In addition, the rack should be equipped with the blade assembly unit.

Do not install the rack in the following locations as it may cause malfunctions of the rack, enclosure, or both. Narrow space from which devices cannot be pulled out from the rack completely. Check the Rack and Installation Site The Blade Assemble Unit (blade enclosure) is the rack mount chassis exclusively used to be equipped with CPU blades and hard disks. The blade enclosure is installed in the NEC rack or NEC-recommended rack conforming to the EIA standard.
Installation Procedure Install the blade assembly unit on the rack. If using a non-NEC rack, confirm that it complies with the EIA standard and is designed for installing a blade assembly unit. For details, contact your service representative. Install the blade assembly unit on the rack in the following procedure.

Installation of core nuts Install the core nuts at the points confirmed in "Check of installation positions". A total of four core nuts is installed (two at each of the front left and right sides of the rack). Install each core nut to pinch the frame. A click occurs if the core nut is inserted completely.

Adjusting the length of rear fan unit The length of the rear fan unit can be adjusted three ways; short, standard, and stretch. The factory-set is "standard". Short: Shorten the depth of the rear fan unit according to the rack on which the rear fan unit is to be installed.

Remove the two screws from the bottom of the rear fan unit, and take out the hook parts. Hook parts Remove five screws from top and both sides of the rear fan unit. Separate the rear fan unit into the front and the rear sections. Take care not to apply load on the cable of the fan unit.

Removal Procedure Remove the blade assembly unit from the rack in the following procedure. CAUTION Observe the following instructions to use the blade assembly unit safely. Failure to follow these instructions may result in death or serious personal injury. See pages 1 to 8 for details.
Intelligent Switch (L2) The slot to install the intelligent switch is shown below. Install the intelligent switch (L2) in the ascending order of slot numbers (from left to right slots). IMPORTANT: The intelligent switch (L2) also manages the KVM Select, Media Select, and Serial Select functions. Connect the BLADE switching cable A/B and KVM cable to the intelligent switch (L2) in the slot of which Master/Slave lamp is lit, because that intelligent switch carries the management function.
Installation Procedure Install an intelligent switch in the following procedure. You can install the intelligent switch while the blade assembly unit is being powered (the CPU blade and the intelligent switch (L2) in the other slot is operating). The following shows an example of the installation. An intelligent switch can be installed on another slot in the similar way.

Remove the front bezel if it is installed. Turn the two thumbscrews counterclockwise to unlock the front fan unit. Front Bezel The front bezel is the security cover covering the front face of the blade assembly unit; it prevents the blade assembly unit from being pulled out from the rack unless the front bezel has first been removed. Remove the front bezel to pull the blade assembly unit out of the rack or to install or remove a hard disk drive.
Removal Insert the attached security key into the key slot and turn it towards the front bezel side (pressing slightly on it) to release the lock. Connecting Cables Front Panel Connect the ICMB cable, USB cable, and serial cable to the proper connectors located on the front of the blade assembly unit. You must remove the front bezel before connecting the USB or serial cable. For the ICMB cable, you need to remove the front bezel only if you want to change the chassis ID.
1-16 is defined in the notation of NEC ESMPRO. Setting the chassis ID switch to 0 makes value 1 set in the notation of NEC ESMPRO and setting the chassis ID switch to A makes value 1 set in the notation of NEC ESMPRO.
Rear Side To connect the LAN cable (RJ-45) to the blade assembly unit or interface cables to the CPU blade, remove the rear fan unit shown in the figure below. You do not need to remove the rear fan unit when connecting the power cord.
Save cables in the cable tray to be routed to the outside so that they may not disturb the installation of the rear fan unit. Failure to Eject the Disk When you fail to eject the CD-ROM tray with the Eject button and take out the CD-ROM from the blade assembly unit, follow the procedure below. Shutdown the OS, and press the POWER switch to power off the unit. (The POWER lamp goes off.) Insert a metal pin of approximately 1.2 mm in diameter and 100 mm in length into the emergency hole on the right front of the CD-ROM drive.
Handling the CD-ROM Keep the following notes in mind to use the CD-ROM for the blade assembly unit: The ability to play back disks that do not conform to the CD standard is not guaranteed. Do not drop the CD-ROM. Do not place anything on the CD-ROM or bend the CD-ROM.
Ask your service representative to install or remove the Additional Power Unit (N8405-012/012F). The service personnel should read and follow instructions described in the "Hardware Installation and Upgrade Guide".
