Introduction to the Administrator Guide About this Guide This guide explains how to use the Dell DR4000 system to perform data storage operations and manage storage and replication containers. This guide introduces and describes the DR4000 system graphical user interface (GUI) that you can use to manage your backup and replication operations.

For optimal savings, the native data sources need to send data to the DR4000 system in a raw state for ingestion. Block deduplication is not as effective on existing compressed files due to the nature of file compression because its 0s and 1s change from the original format.
Data replication improves fault-tolerance, which improves the reliability of maintaining saved data, and permitting accessibility to the same stored data. The DR4000 system uses an active form of replication that lets you configure a primary-backup scheme in which the system processes data storage requests from a specified source to a specified destination or replica.

Replicas on the other hand are frequently updated and can quickly lose any historical state. The DR4000 system can be considered as a form of a storage replication process in which the backup and deduplication data is replicated in real-time or via a scheduled window in a network environment.

DR4000 System and Data Operations Data is stored and resides on the Dell DR4000 system, which is a 2-Rack Unit (RU) appliance, and the system software is pre-installed. The internal drives of the system are configured as a Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) 1 on the RAID Controller, which is considered to be volume 1.
• An active network is available using Ethernet cables and connections. NOTE: If your DR4000 system is equipped with a 10-GbE NIC, you must use CAT6 copper cabling. If you do not click Continue before the 30-second interval elapses, the system logs you out, and you must log in again to resume using the DR4000 system. Before you attempt to manage your data using the system navigation panel options, you should understand what options and capabilities you can use.

The DR4000 system GUI simplifies the process for storing this type of data by using its system storage processes.
About the Schedule Page and Options In the Schedules page, you can set a new or modify an existing schedule to run two very important DR4000 system operations: replication and disk space reclamation (the latter being referred to as the Cleaner).
About the System Configuration Page and Options In the System Configuration page, you can edit the existing system password, and shut down or reboot the system. The System Configuration page displays four categories of current system configuration settings in the DR4000 system. NOTE: Each pane title in the System Configuration page serves as a hyperlink.
For more information, see "Resetting the Default System Password" on page 37. • Shutdown—use this option to shut down the DR4000 system. CAUTION: Shutdown powers Off the appliance on which the system software is installed.
Diagnostics files are listed by file name, size, the timestamp when the file was created, the reason it was created, and its status. The diagnostics bundle of log files are used by Dell Support to diagnose system conditions that you report or are detected as issues during DR4000 system operations.
NOTE: It is recommended that you use the Initial System Configuration Wizard to configure your DR4000 system. Changing some of the system settings using the DR4000 system GUI (bonding, MTU, hostname, IP address, and DNS) can cause issues with GUI access to the system.

– Max Speed (1000baseT/Full) – Duplex (Full) Managing the DR4000 System Password You can manage the password that you use when logging in to the system in two ways: • Modifying the existing login password using Edit Password in the System Configuration page.

Shutting Down the DR4000 System If needed, you can shut down the system by selecting Shutdown in the System Configuration page.
Configuring Compression Level Settings You can configure the data compression that you want used on all incoming data that is to be backed up and deduplicated by your DR4000 system. NOTE: This is a global compression level setting for your system. Once a compression level setting change is made, the change affects only new incoming data (it is written using the new setting).
The Updated Compression dialog is displayed when the selection is successful. Configuring Active Directory Settings You need to configure this setting if you want your DR4000 system to join a domain that contains a Microsoft Active Directory Service (ADS). To configure the system for a domain with ADS: 1 Select System Configuration Active Directory.
Configuring Email Alert Settings You can create and manage email addresses for recipients in which you want to send DR4000 system email alerts. The Email Alerts page lets you add new, or edit or delete existing recipient email addresses using the corresponding options, and send a test message to the recipient email addresses displayed in the Recipient Email Address pane.
4 and 5. Sending a Test Message The DR4000 system provides a capability that lets you send test messages to all of the recipient email addresses. This allows you to ensure that the process for sending system alerts works, and that it reaches all of the email recipients you have configured.
Configuring Administrator Contact Information You should configure administrator contact information that identifies the person who manages your DR4000 system. To do this, enter contact information for the administrator using the Add Admin option (or edit existing contact information by using the Edit Admin option) on the Email Alerts page options bar.
Configuring Relay Hosts You may need to configure a mail relay host for your DR4000 system if your network email system requires that it have an external mail server. To perform this task, define the mail relay host or edit an existing mail relay host using the Add Relay Host or Edit Relay Host options on the options bar of the Email Alerts page.
Managing System Date and Time Settings If you need to manage date and time settings that are used by your system to synchronize it with other DR4000 systems or clients running in your domain, use the Edit option in the Date and Time page.
NOTE: It is recommended that you use the NTP mode to ensure better replication service operations. Set or modify existing date and time settings for your DR4000 system by using the Edit option in the Date and Time page. Editing System Date and Time Settings To modify the default time and date settings for your DR4000 system: 1 Select System Configuration Date and Time.
The Date and Time page is displayed, and an Enabled NTP service dialog is displayed when successful. Creating Containers After initialization, the DR4000 system contains a default container: backup. Containers function like a shared file system that can be accessed using either (or both) the NFS or CIFS network protocols.
NOTE: The DR4000 system does not support creating container names that start with 0 (zero). In addition, many of the DR4000 system GUI and CLI operations will not work when a container name starts with a 0. Monitoring the DR4000 System This chapter describes how you can monitor the current state of the DR4000 system operations using the Dashboard page or its options in the navigation panel. The Dashboard page displays a summary of system status categories, and includes several hyperlinks to other system pages.
To display more information about the current HW State, click the related hyperlink to display the Health page. The Health page displays the current status of the DR4000 system hardware: front and rear chassis views, hard drives, power supplies, fans, temperature, voltages, network interface card (NIC) status, and other components.

A DR4000 diagnostic log file is a bundle that contains a variety of file types that record the latest system settings, and save them in a compressed .lzip file format.

The diagnostics log file bundle collects the same type of hardware, storage, and operating system information collected by the Dell System E-Support Tool (DSET) from the Dell DR4000 system hardware as if you had used the DR4000 system CLI commands (diagnostics --collect --dset).
To verify the currently installed DR4000 software version: NOTE: You can verify the version of the installed DR4000 system software in the Dashboard page, the Support Page, and the Software Upgrade page. The following procedure documents the process from the Software Upgrade page.
The DR4000 system only supports the copying of upgrade images and diagnostics files to and from the system using WinSCP. The DR4000 system does not support the copying or deleting of any other file types using WinSCP. To use WinSCP to copy DR4000 software upgrade and diagnostics log files, ensure that the File Protocol mode is set to SCP (Secure Copy) mode.
